ROLE POSITIONING AND OBJECTIVES
The position of Senior Technical Manager Data Science Team functions as a team lead for BAT in the application and delivery of AI/ML solutions. As a team lead, you will take ownership of Data Science projects, and be involved hands-on to apply innovative data science techniques and insights to business to drive/support strategic business decisions. Once a project is delivered, you will be expected to be able to provide technical support whenever needed.
Your role will involve delivering superior data science capabilities for our product teams responsible for lifecycle management of advanced analytics products. You will oversee a team that implements data science & advanced analytics capabilities and platforms across BAT working closely with cross-functional teams to evaluate potential risks, opportunities, and ensure successful implementation of projects.
The ideal candidate will have a ability to understand a given business domain, extensive knowledge of AI and ML technologies, excellent strategic thinking and management skills.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR
- Utilizes statistical modelling and other data science techniques for descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analysis. Evangelizes new ideas technologies solutions to gain acceptance from a wide range of audiences
- Interprets and applies data in the most complex analyses, and explains findings to business audiences to improve products and processes
- Sets the vision for manipulation and analyses of large and complex data sets
- Documents projects including business objectives, data gathering and processing, leading approaches, final algorithm, detailed set of results and analytical metrics
- Analyzes requirements, estimates effort, and helps with project planning
- Participates in project management activities, and coordinates with development team
- Provides daily/weekly statuses on projects, proactively identifies and resolves issues/roadblocks with team
- Manages code reviews, pull requests, ensures code quality, and development best practices
- Has good working knowledge of tools and technologies including AzureML, MLOps, Python, Snowflake, and Microsoft Fabric
- Directs the design and development of new or complex algorithms and statistical predictive models and determines analytical approaches and modelling techniques to evaluate scenarios and potential future outcomes
- Directs and implements activities that impact the critical directions of the organization. Typically assigned to the most critical and strategic complex high-risk undertakings
- Determines leading edge technical business approaches or develops major new technical tools
- Interacts with internal and external peers and management to develop unprecedented solutions that affect several areas
- Guides and mentors, a wide range of audiences. Provides guidance regarding analytical approach and iteration of algorithms
- Implements policies and defines approach to strategy achievement for specified area of responsibility.
- Analyses long term impact of new or anticipated strategies and decisions
- Manages budgets, operational plans and performance requirements for the specified are of responsibility
- Responsible for meeting budgetary goals and objectives
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Bachelors or Master’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering with Specialization in Data Science, Mathematics, Economics OR a quantitative, computational or technical discipline AND at least 7 years of post-graduate professional work experience in a statistical/Data Science function
- Deep knowledge of open-source data science and statistics packages such as Python, R, Spark, etc.
- Experience in data science, advanced analytics, or statistics. ability to interrogate data, perform analyses, interpret data, and present to business audiences
- Deep knowledge of SQL
- Experience establishing and maintaining key relationships with internal (peers, business partners and leadership) and external (business community, clients and vendors) within a matrix organization to develop strategies that meet department goals within budget and timelines
- Experience presenting findings to all levels of an organization, including the C Suite level
- At least 5 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace
- At least 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership or cross functional team leadership
